PADI Open Water Diver NEMO 33...

Course overview:

The PADI Open Water Diver certification is the corner stone of the PADI System. The course is split into three main areas with sub divisions:

  • Knowledge development, in which there are five modules.
  • Confined water is the next segment and is made up of five dives. These are done in water that represents swimming pool like conditions. During this portion of the course you will be taught how to master all of the scuba skills.
  • The final segment is made up of four open water dives, the last two are to a maximum depth of 18m. During these dives you will show that you have mastered all that you have learned in the previous two areas.
  • Before completion the student must complete a 200m swim and a 10-minute tread water.

PADI Open Water Divers are qualified to:

  • Dive with a buddy independent of supervision while applying the knowledge and skills they learn in this course, within the limits of their training and experience.
  • Obtain air fills, scuba equipment and other services
  • Plan, conduct and log open water no stop dives when properly equipped and when accompanied by a buddy in conditions that they have either had training or experience in.
  • Dive to a maximum depth of 18m.

The NEMO 33 exception:

PADI allows in its Standards & Procedures that, not only the Confined Water sessions, but also the Open Water dives are conducted in NEMO33.

When the Open Water Diver Course is conducted entirely in NEMO33, certification allows divers to dive autonomously in NEMO33.

To be entitled to dive autonomously (without an instructor thus) outside, your will need to do your first dive (called "Adaptation dive" or "Upgrade dive") with a PADI instructor. During this dive, you will get familiar with the specific Open Water environment by completing some skills that you have been learning in NEMO33.

You can choose whether you want to experience this outside dive in a Belgian lake or quarry accompanied by your NEMO33 Instructor (price is 80€ - incl. full diving gear & certification fees), or on your first diving holiday somewhere in a tropical water...
